OCEANSIDE
– Three people were injured seriously yesterday when a motorist racing
with another driver apparently crossed into oncoming traffic on state
Route 76 at Interstate 5, police said.
More
critical injuries may have been prevented because seat belts were in use
and air bags deployed, Officer Mike Mulroy said.
Mulroy
said a small passenger car driven by Randy Aguilar, in his early 20s and
from Stockton, appeared to have been racing another vehicle westbound on
Route 76 about 3:15 p.m. when it crossed the line into the path of a
compact pickup driven by Richard Prewitt, 54, of Oceanside.
Aguilar
was airlifted to Scripps Memorial Hospital, La Jolla, with head injuries
and multiple cuts. He was listed in stable condition last night.
His
unidentified passenger, unconscious at the scene of the accident, was
admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at Scripps and listed in serious
condition.
Prewitt
was listed in stable condition at the same hospital.
